【活動報告】
KEIO 2020 project メンバー14名と体育研究所の教員3名は、11月19日より25日まで7日間の英国視察へ行ってまいりました。
昨年度行われた視察を元に、今年度の視察ではより現実的、具体的なボランティア活動をイメージできるよう準備を進めて参りました。来年度に迫る英国選手団受け入れに向けて、１）英国の文化について、２）選手受け入れに関するサポート体制の強化、３）地域とスポーツとの繋がり、４）2012年ロンドン大会の際に選手団を受け入れたラフバラー大学について、５）大会後のレガシーについて、学び・理解を深めることを目的として掲げました。
特に今回は、オリンピック・パラリンピックの際の大学におけるボランティアのあり方や大学のレガシーについて最も学ぶことができた、ラフバラー大学訪問についてご報告させて頂きます。
ラフバラー大学は、ロンドン中心部から電車で２時間程離れた所に位置しているスポーツとの繋がりが強い事で有名な大学です。また、2012年のロンドン大会の際に英国チームと日本チームの事前キャンプ地に選ばれた大学でもあり、その際には学生ボランティアも多数活動していました。キャンパス内には広々とした屋内テニスコートや、砂場が備えられた屋内陸上施設など、充実した大学の設備に終始驚きを隠せませんでした。さらに、全室バリアフリーとなっている障がい者用宿泊施設内も案内して頂き、座った状態で利用できるシャワーや扉のないクローゼット、一般的なものより横幅のある出入り口など、細部に渡る気遣いを肌で感じることができました。
また、キャンパス内を案内して頂いた大学スタッフの方々からは大学ボランティアに求められていることは必要以上のサポートではなく、実にシンプルで当たり前なことであるという事を伺い、ボランティアの根本を見つめ直す大変貴重な経験となりました。
今回の英国視察では、アスリートファーストのスポーツボランティア精神を皆で再認識し、事前キャンプに向けてさらに士気を高めることができました。英国視察で得た学びや経験をもとに、KEIO 2020 project全体で知識を深め、事前キャンプに向けて準備して参りたいと思います。今回の視察を実りのあるものにしてくださったBOA・BPA、ラフバラー大学の方々、英国三田会の方々、大学の先生方、関わって下さった全ての方に感謝申し上げます。
【Activity Report】
14 members from KEIO 2020 project and 3 teachers from the Institute of Physical Education made an inspection tour in the UK for 7 days, from November 19th to 25th.
Based on the inspection tour held in 2018, we prepared so that we could imagine more realistic and detailed volunteer activities. In preparation for the acceptance of Team GB this year, we tried to deepen the knowledge and understanding of 1)British culture, 2)strengthening the support system when accepting athletes, 3)connection between sport and the local community, 4)Loughborough University which accepted athletes at the London 2012, and 5)the legacy after the Games.
We would especially like to share our visit to Loughborough University, where we learned how to encourage volunteering in universities during the Olympics and Paralympics, as well as its legacy.
Loughborough University is located approximately two hours away from the heart of London by train, and is well known for its connection to various sports. They also hosted the pre-Games preparation camps for the British and Japanese national teams before the 2012 London Olympics and Paralympics, and numerous student volunteers actively participated in this. Upon our visit, we were overwhelmed by the exceptional facilities, including a huge indoor tennis court and an indoor athletic field with a sandbox for track and field athletes. Additionally, we were able to visit the accommodations for people with disabilities, such as bathrooms with shower seats, open closets, and wide doorway gates. We were touched with all those thoughtful facilities.
Thus, the university staff advised us that we, student volunteers, would not be expected to give more than enough support but rather give more simple actions with the kindfull mind. It was such a valuable experience to reconsider what we can do as a volunteer organization.
From this visit to the UK, everyone reaffirmed the athlete-first spirit of sports volunteering and was able to raise the morale for the pre-Games preparation camp. Based on the learning and experience gained from this inspection tour, we would like to deepen our knowledge throughout the KEIO 2020 project and prepare for the pre-Games preparation camp. We would like to thank the BOA and BPA, Loughborough University, the Eikoku Mitakai, teachers at Keio, and all those who have been involved in making this visit productive.
