“Learning is Jitsugaku, or Science.”
70th Conference of the Japan Society of Physical Education, Health and Sports Sciences: Message from the Chairman
On this occasion, it has been decided that Keio University’s Hiyoshi Campus will serve as the venue for the 70th Conference of the Japan Society of Physical Education, Health and Sports Sciences (JSPEHSS) to be held over a three-day period from Tuesday, September 10 to Thursday, September 12, 2019.
The theme for this conference will be “Learning is Jitsugaku, or Science.” The founder of Keio University, Yukichi Fukuzawa, taught that learning means “jitsugaku,” that is to say, science, which he understood as something entirely for the purpose of encouraging human interaction. What Fukuzawa called “jitsugaku” does not refer to learning that is of immediate utility, but rather scientific pursuits. In other words, the “spirit of jitsugaku” is a scientific mindset that solves problems by empirically ascertaining the truth. Furthermore, “human interaction” here is referring to society, and the intended meaning is to improve social systems and human relationships through science.
Currently, Japan is preparing to consecutively host global sporting events including the Rugby World Cup 2019, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and the World Masters Games Kansai 2021, while there is an expectation from the world for Japan to put into practice the ideals of peace and harmonious coexistence through the power of sports. Therefore, I believe that it is now necessary for the JSPEHSS to confront social issues head on through the “science” it has developed over the past 70 years and clearly demonstrate the social role that sports and physical education can play. I would like this conference to be a place where we, as an interactive scientific body with social responsibilities, can together consider what to have in our sights hereafter and what we should propagate domestically and globally. I am looking forward to welcoming many participants to our campus at this year’s event.
