Yukichi Fukuzawa once wrote calligraphy of the words “A healthy body and an active spirit.” This phrase highlights the importance of maintaining physical health as a premise for vigorous intellectual activities. It stresses the significance of the body as the foundation for all human activities, and it expresses the belief that maintaining one’s health of the body through regular training contributes to the proficient performance of intense spiritual activities as well.

Fukuzawa also believed that one must “First build the body of a beast, then foster the heart of a person.” Maintaining a healthy body and mind, practicing sport as well as study, and building character are all crucial.
